EASTWINDS - a quintet with highly diverse cultural roots and sound
Eastwinds began in 2014 when Mark Cain, Esfandiar Shahmir and Sanshi came together as an experimental woodwind trio. From Iran, Shahmir is a virtuoso of both the Persian ney (flute) and daf (frame drum) and is a rare and remarkable musician. Japanese-born, Sanshi is rhythmically spellbinding on didgeridoo and Cain (Australia) is a maker and player of a formidable range of reeds. flutes and ethnic winds.
Eastwinds has expanded over the years to the current sextet with members born in five countries. Silky-voiced Estonian vocalist, Kristiina Maalaps, is a magical improvisor, whilst English-born guitarist, Steve Barnes and his bassist son, Kieran underscore the warm embrace of the Eastwinds sound.
The music is unmistakably original and eclectic, reflecting our influences: Estonian runo-song, classical Persian music, Balkan village music, klezmer, acoustic folk and contemporary jazz, all of which find expression in the band’s unique all-acoustic Australian sound. We hope you enjoy the journey.
