D’BRA
Vocalist... Musician... Songwriter... Actress. are nouns which apply to the multi-talented D’Bra Powell.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, of African and Native-American ancestry, and now residing in the New York City Metropolitan area, D'Bra Powell has made a name for herself in the entertainment industry with her dynamic voice, attractive looks, and exciting stage presence. Her vocal style has been defined as a unique "vocal experience" filled with a powerful execution, sultry styling, and an incredible range which gives her music it's own personal signature.
D'Bra's father who raised her was Rev. Roy Perry, a well known minster, and her mother, Verleen Hollins, was a world renowned songstress, pianist, and musical director that helped D'Bra stay firmly grounded in song. D’Bra’s birth father, Loranza Powell, is her biggest supporter. It was her mom who taught D'Bra how to play the piano. D'Bra's parents instilled in her the love for the church and for music and this legacy is what she considers to be the major influences in her career. She has focused her energies in Gospel, Jazz, R&B, and Dance/ House/Freestyle. Her brilliant smooth-as-silk songwriting skills, deep rooted in emotions, have enabled her to reach to out to a diverse fan base.
D'Bra attended Northern Illinois University and earned a degree in education. While at NIU, D'Bra was active in the NIU Black Choir (lead vocalist), the NIU Jazz Ensemble (the first and only African and Native-American vocalist), and a popular R&B band. After graduation, D'Bra moved to California where she refined her singing and acting skills. She was the lead vocalist with several R&B groups, and appeared in television commercials for Colgate toothpaste and CBS television's "Get Ready for CBS". She also perfected the art of jingles on various projects, including Pepsi. D'Bra also starred in the Reggie Montgomery Theatre's production of "Porgy and Bess", and "A Raisin In The Sun".
She then relocated to New York City, to apply her talents. D'Bra appeared in several off-Broadway productions, earning awards in 2000 for "Best Vocalist/Actress" in the Open Cage Theatre's Production of Tina Sattin's summer festival in the park, and in 2001 for "Best Vocalist/Actress" for the Ujamaa Black Theatre's Production of Titus Walker's "For The Love Of My Black Woman". D'Bra also sung with the gospel group "The Etherical Singers". D’Bra is also featured Arnie Joseph 's CD, "Expressions Of His Love", released in 2003.
D'Bra has studied with Reggie Montgomery, Connie Stevens, Tina Satin, and Titus Walker (acting); Reggie Segars , Sal Dupree, Dean Verhines, Seth Riggs, Gloria Rusch, and Allen McBride (voice); Harriet Shock (songwriting); and Paula Kelly (acting/dancing). D'Bra has performed with Natalie Cole, Jean Carne, Freddie Hubbard, Gerald Albright, and Lou Rawls, just to name a few. She was the opening act for Brenda K. Starr, Ben Dixon, and Freak Wincey among others.
D'Bra continues to perform in the New York City Metropolitan Area with veteran Jazz, R&B, and Gospel Groups, as well as fronting her own group. D'Bra's own Jazz, R&B, and Gospel ensemble is highly sought after throughout the region. The band's rich sound is derived from the affable mixture of keyboards, strings, horns, and percussion. She has released several singles over the past few years which have garnered the attention of music industry executives. D’Bra has had Gospel and Dance Releases to show her versatility as an artist - she can handle any type of music. Moreover, promoters from the South, Midwest, as well as from Montreal, Canada have invited D'Bra to headline their events.
D’Bra has teamed up with Atwork Entertainment (James Germany) to oversee and push her career to new heights….She recently sent home the man who influenced her the most in her career. Her daddy…To honor him in song she wrote” Daddy’s Gone Home” produced by LooweeR Rivera. LooweeR is currently working with her on her forthcoming project, which includes the talents of many other gifted musicians and producers and is expected to be released during the first half of 2014.
