Nas once rhymed, “No idea’s original” and he was right. When it comes to music let’s be honest, few recreate the wheel. The great musicians haven’t necessarily created something brand new. They gave us the right balance of entertainment and thought-provoking material. Think Michael Jackson, Prince, Nina, Stevie and a score of others. Their catalogs aren’t just comprised of solely “dance” tracks or “conscious” tracks. Mike’s catalog consists of tracks like “Rock with You,” but also “Black and White.” Whatever happened to that balance?!? Enter Dominique “Ceewhy” Suttles to remedy that. Ceewhy was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father was a social progressive who stood shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Hosea Williams and John Lewis, and a renowned DJ whose record collection could fill a large apartment. His mother was a runway model who owned her own fashion boutique. Ceewhy was practically born with the balance the game needs in his DNA. As a youngster, he benefited from his pop’s expansive record collection that consisted of Alexander O’Neal, Bach, Cameo, Harold Melvin, Roy Ayers, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Mozart and tons of other artists. Cee would spend a lot of his childhood staying up all night studying the lyrics inside of record covers. His music career started under the tutelage of a local high school teacher who encouraged him to scribe his thoughts as poetry. It was only a matter of time when his love for music and poetry naturally evolved into decimating emcees. At the end of high school, Cee was faced with a choice: pursue music full-time or continue his education. He chose neither and did both at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia. On campus, Cee would continue honing his craft. While winning battles boosted his recognition and income, Cee spent a great deal of time improving his songwriting ability because as evidenced by many, few “battle emcees” have long careers in the rap game. By the end of college, Cee had established a strong network, a fan base, a well-balanced arsenal of sharp lyricism and inventive songwriting ability and the will to not just sell records but to leave us with something we can live to. He’s poised to embody the balance the game needs…
