On August 21, 1997 a star was born and his name is J. Mason. Joshua Wayne Mason ll was named after his father. Although, he started writing music at the age of 8, J. Mason didn't take his craft as an artist seriously. Raised by his grandmother, who is more like his mother, they made a trip to Atlanta from Tennessee together when he was only 13.
It was then he took music serious and met with songwriter and producer Haywood Tucker, who got him to perform for an Easter event. After that he was provided the opportunity to record a nine song demo within a two day time frame.
The first thing he remembers about being inspired by to start rap is when he heard Chamillionaire's single, "Ridin' Dirty," on the radio. “Something about the track just caught my attention and made me believe that I could pursue a music career,” says Mason. After that he began doing his research and listening to other artists like Snoop Dogg, Will Smith, Lil Bow Wow, 50 Cent, and Chris Brown. He gives the most credit to Eminem and Lil Wayne for influence, however, he stays true to himself and is paving his own lane. There are a few things that keep J. Mason going. God first, because he looks at it like a gift and wants to give his gift back to God. Secondly, his Grandmother/Momma and little sister. J. Mason's passion and love for the craft keeps him working to be real. Last but definitely not least anybody and everybody who supports what he does, and also the one's who said he couldn't do it!
Some of the obstacles J. Mason faces are overcoming the fact that NOBODY from his hometown of Tazewell, TN has made it out by doing music, let alone in hip hop. Also figuring out the hard way who is solid and trustworthy to work with and who isn't because there a lot of snakes in the grass in the music industry. Some of his biggest achievements would have to be opening up for his favorite artists/DJ's, getting my music played on the radio (Online & FM), releasing his music on all digital streaming platforms, building genuine business relationships, and being placed in magazines such as "The Grynd Report" & "Combine Magazine". He classifies himself as an emcee in the hip hop genre, but diverse enough to work with artists of almost any genre of music.
Outside of music J. Mason is an everyday person. He prays and still works a 9-5. Mason likes to kick it with friends and family, play video games, watch movies, go to the gym, party sometimes, and shop for new clothes to rock on stage or in video shoots.
Knoxville, Louisville, Cincinnati, Fort Wayne, New York, Boston, and Saint Louis are some of the cities J. Mason has had a chance to perform in. He has also toured all over the state of Georgia including Atlanta, which a lot of people consider the mecca of Hip Hop. J. Mason has opened up for Waka Flocka Flame, Young Dro, Snow Tha Product, Montana of 300, DJ Holiday, DJ Drama, DJ Swampizzo, DJ E. Sudd, DJ Smallz, DJ Scream, Ferrari Simmons & Fly Guy DC of Streetz 94.5, and super producer Zaytoven. He has worked with such producers as Haywood Tucker, Laws Productions, Rafael Capone (Owner of Soul Asylum Studios), "Dub" of (SAS), Miah of (The Sound Lair), Traysmoove, Joey Benjamins, "JRHITMAKER", "Let That Boy Cook", and "The Martianz". He has also worked with the following DJ'S, hosts, & radio personalites. Tampa Mystic, DJ Such N Such, DJ Mcbmoss, DJ Pressure, TJ Making Moves, DJ Babyslimm, Atl GA Clay, Fort Knox, DJ Chill Will, AJ Lindsey (Def Jam Records), DJ xatl, DJ Rello, DJ Style, etc.
On October 6, 2016 he released his first official project titled "Humble & Hungry" on all online music platforms! The album featured nine original songs with no features including his most successful single yet, "By Any Means Necessary". The project went on to sell 500 hard copies and did a great amount of streams online. His second official project titled "Artistically Inclined" mixed and mastered by "Miah" of (The Sound Lair) is set to release on October 28, 2018. It will also have nine original tracks with no features.
As J. Mason continues to release new material and grow his fan base, he expects to learn more of the business and continue to build with the people he has already surrounded himself with. 5 years from now he sees himself headlining sold out shows and living out his dreams and everything he is working hard to accomplish.
His reality, originality, bars, wordplay, relatable content, unique style, and lyrics you have to think about to understand are some of the qualities J. Mason feels he brings to the game. Inspiration, motivation, and peace of mind hopefully. The correct interpretation and a better understanding of who he is what Mason hopes his listeners can get from his music. When asked what advice he has for anyone who is aspiring a career of any choice in life, “Be yourself, believe in yourself, live your truth, appreciate the real one's around you, work like every day is your last, and never give up. Fuck anyone who has anything negative to say about you or what you're working toward! Nobody can stop what GOD has planned for YOU!”
