Featured in XXL 2015 Freshman Class issue Lance Gibbs better known as HQ is an American rapper, record producer, and entrepreneur from New York, New York. He is the CEO of Still Young Records, which he started in February 2010 at the age of 18. His “H for Hierarchy” LP, which is hosted by Coast2CoastMixtapes, has been downloaded more than 800,000 times and still counting. HQ currently lives in Atlanta, GA.
The singer and songwriter of hip hop music known as HQ has released his latest single, “Go Deeper.” The track is the first single from his popular LP mixtape, “H for Hierarchy,” which appeared on the DatPiff website in July of 2015. HQ’s Smooth, slick, and bringing dropped bass measurable in sheer tonnage, “Go Deeper” by HQ is listed number 1 on Atl Top 20.
HQ has cited as main artistic influences many of today’s most popular legends of the scene, such as Jay-Z, 50 Cent, and Eminem, as well as titans of the old school like the Fugees, Tupac Shakur, and the Notorious B.I.G.. ditionally, HQ also cites reggae demigod Bob Marley and, in his own words, “hip-hop culture is me. I love it.”
As with most music from HQ, “Go Deeper” is a track with a solid theme and positive message. This extends throughout the “H for Hierarchy” LP mixtape, as well.
“The message of my album is be yourself,” HQ writes. “Appreciate and enjoy life. Also: stay hungry, even when your belly full.”
This last proverb is an excellent example of the kinds of wit with which the rapper laces his urban poetry. Every track on “H for Hierarchy,” and especially “Go Deeper,” is a song written with deliberation in its every rhyme and line. This comes as no surprise, however, considering HQ’s long experience in sound.
“I was raised on music,” writes the rapper. “Music set the tone of my house growing up. I could always tell what kind of mood my parents were in based off the music they played. I used to watch the Video Music Box with my dad as a kid. I loved music videos. I used to sneak and rap all the songs in the mirror with a brush. I mean I knew every word to every song then. It became part of who I am.”
The brush was replaced by a mic before too long, but not before HQ cut his teeth in real competition. He writes of this, “I used to rap battle, then in high school I started a group called Lotto Family. That’s when I knew that I was born to travel the world performing my music.”
HQ has performed at several venues in New York including the Madam Walker Theatre Center, B.B. Kings in New York, in Times Square, and at the Hard Rock Cafe in New York.

The 13 track project is currently available for download. The mixtape features appearances from Luisa, Tek, and Majestik. H for Hierarchy (currently 600k downloads) is full of bass-dropping beats and infectious hooks; he’ll have you singing along to every chorus. With a style all his own and an ambition to succeed, you can’t help but put these tracks on replay. His flow mirrors a northern vibe, but he has proven to be multifaceted and incorporates some southern beats. In “H for Hierarchy” he discusses the traits that he admires most, loyalty, honesty, hard work, and a fast lifestyle. His productions use instruments, including the piano, to mix a lighter vibe with the hard-hitting bass. HQ is organized and fluid with his lyrics, making the transition between songs flawless. HQ’s new mixtape is the next big thing, the type of mixtape you ride out to. Be sure to keep up with HQ new music.
